Brief Profile

Raj healthcare society was established on 4th January 1990, society was granted registration on 25th January 2007 with an aim of eradication of avoidable blindness (primarily). It is being audited with regular submission of income tax return every year since 2008. So far it has managed its expenses on free and subsidized patients from paying patients but in Jun 2020, executive committee and general body of Raj Healthcare Society has decided to find external fund for non-recurring works like mobile clinics, screening equipment to scale up the eye care treatment close to the community, train the supporting staff(mainly female to educate as vision technician, computer operator, counsellor, customer care executive, from local community.

Mobile clinics and vision centres will be technology enabled (modern equipment for eye test , EMR (electronic medical record keeping) and internet for teleconsultation)

Aims and objectives

Provide eye care where it is very much needed but uptake is poor due to poverty, lack of awareness or non-availability of eye clinics.

  • (a) Provide eye care of highest ‘Quality’ where it is very much needed but uptake is poor due to poverty, lack of awareness or non-availability of eye clinics. Eradication of blindness through Promotion of health, education, employment, by opening of hospitals, wellness centre, educational centres, satellite and mobile centres.

One vision centre with door to door screening (ankhon ka upchar aap ke dwar) can take care of 50 to 70 villages, per anum 50,000 eye check up, 1000 surgeries or by all 20 VC we can get 5 lakhs beneficiaries with 10 thousands eye surgeries every year.
  • (c) Skill Development- Encourage and strengthen teaching and training programs along with super specializations to Doctors, Ophthalmic Assistants, training of ASHA, Anganbari workers and other healthcare professionals in community, management and supportive human resource, through ongoing research and academic activities.

  • (e) Enhancing eye bank and keratoplasty services.
  • (f) epidemiological research to know the facts about eye care in society, availability and requirement of vision care services.

At present we are working at raj eye hospital, unit of Raj Healthcare Society, opposite Marwar college, Gorakhpur, UP.

We are providing world class eye care facility to poor and marginalized people since Jan 1990,

Our main works are free patient consultation in permanent hospital set ups, temporary setup like rural and urban camps, school screening, a small proportion is paid consultation. A good number of patients are operated without fee and without consumable cost, some are subsidized and some are paid eye surgeries.

We did not charge even a single rupee of consultation fee for eye check-up in one surgical center situated opposite Marwar college, Gorakhpur from jan 1990 to October 2020 ; it was completely free service to all human being in base hospital at Gorakhpur (Raj eye hospital, unit of Raj Healthcare Society, opposite Marwar College, Gorakhpur). Since November 2020 we have started taking nominal fee for consultation.

Apart from this we are doing free eye camps in schools, housing societies, mohallas of poor, group of people who are vulnerable for poor health and mega eye camps in rural areas providing free eye tests to all ranging from 100 to 500 patients in every camp.

In remote and distant eye camps we provide free transport to almost all patients apart from giving free eye surgeries to all [ no charge for surgeon, operation theatre, consumables or intra ocular lens, medicines and spectacles]

Community Eye care Pyramid

Loss of sight can be the greatest tragedy next to death, yet hundreds of thousands of people in India are suffering from blindness. Participation by the public is the urgent cry in this mission of restoring vision. The hospital began with the motivation and inspiration to serve those people who are deprived of quality eye treatment owing to their economic / geographical constraints.
Apex centre: Raj Eye Hospital at Gorakhpur – with state of the art, modern facilities at par with the international standard.
Urban eye hospital: Raj Eye Hospital in peripheral cities- at least one in a district with surgical set up.
Raj eye clinic: OPD facility supported by optometrists daily and Doctors on visit, mostly at block level
Raj eye Vision centres: OPD facility supported by optometrists, at grass root level all health workers like asha, optometrists, doctors in eye care and other specialties are communicated about free and subsidized services and are encouraged to send people requiring eye care.
Mobile Eye clinic: equipped with modern instruments for diagnosis and telemedicine, connected with apex hospital by internet.
Through this network majority of the eye problems will be corrected at village or block level only, few will need to travel at district or apex centres. They provide curative, preventive and rehabilitative care to the community along with IEC (information, education & communication) program to improve service delivery to potential patients in the community.
Our service area: Gorakhpur and surrounding districts; eastern UP and western Bihar.

Eye camp@rural usually it is done on Sunday or holidays to serve a gathering of 500 patients. Objective of the screening are to find- dry eye, refractive error, cataract, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy.

Eye camp@school screening Objective of the screening are to find-color vision defect, squint, refractive error, amblyopia, any other eye disease. It is done with the help of hand held auto refractor. All students detected for vision defect are referred to nearest branch of the Raj Eye Hospital with a referral card. This helps in creating a youth who are absolutely free from visual disabilities. Conducting such programs helps in eradicating eye diseases at their very onset.

Research work

Reliable population based epidemiological study regarding visual impairment in children and women and all others of eastern Uttar Pradesh, is very much necessary for planning and effective long-term preventive, curative and rehabilitative eye care services in Uttar Pradesh. These data will help to plan the ocular health India. There is a perception that 80% visual impairment is due to cataract which ignores other causes like ROP, Squint, Refractive error, colour vision defect, Amblyopia, congenital cataract, congenital glaucoma, Ptosis, visual impairment due to ocular injury, corneal opacity, congenital disorders in children and in adults -dry eye disease, refractive error, ocular injury, squint, amblyopia, Ptosis, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, retinal and macular diseases, optic atrophy.

Community outreach

Our project will provide affordable and accessible eye care in rural and remote areas, to marginalised group with special emphasis on women and children. We can narrow the gap in accessing the eye care by using mobile eye clinic van, equipped with onsite testing, online telemedicine for challenging cases where senior consultant in apex centre can diagnose and prescribe, dispensing of medicines and specs. Mobile van can reach to rural schools and rural areas where uptake of services is limited. Working with women’s group leaders, women health workers like Asha, female teachers, female politicians, we will be able to change the attitude towards wearing specs in women and girls. Let us ensure poverty or remote location is not a barrier to ocular health for anybody. It is interesting to know that poor vision leads to poor performance in studies, training, jobs, sports and finally it leads to poor utilization of potential, and in a natural course under performance leads to poverty. Due to poverty and lack of awareness people do not go for eye test and eye treatment which lead to visual impairment (preventable but some time permanent blindness and disability)
